Jayda G has announced her new single “‘If We Only Knew”, taken from her new feature-length documentary “Blue Carbon”, which can also be streamed via WaterBear (UK), and HBO Max (US/CAN). 

The single — which features writing and production contributions from Lisa Kainde Diaz (Ibeyi), Jack Penate and David Ariza — delivers heartfelt lyrics in both English and Spanish and utilizes field recordings from the places Jayda filmed “Blue Carbon”, like the sounds of popping mangrove forests, munching manatees, and bird calls, to create a blend of nature and music. 

Speaking about the track, Jayda says ”The song is a heartfelt plea to Mother Nature, with lyrics like 'I keep calling your name,' showing our desire to reconnect with the planet. Through this track, we want to highlight our impact on the environment and inspire everyone to seek forgiveness and work towards a better relationship with nature.“

Blue Carbon is the term given to three key coastal ecosystems - seagrass meadows, mangroves and tidal marshes - that fringe every continent. Though a relatively newly-discovered phenomenon, Blue Carbon's ability to sequester carbon from the atmosphere at a faster rate than the Amazon rainforest has made it an important ecological discovery, with the ability to absorb a staggering 5% of the projected 23 billion tons of CO₂ we need to remove from the atmosphere every year by 2030 in order to avoid a climate disaster.

Hosted and narrated by Grammy-nominated Music Producer, DJ and Environmental Toxicologist Jayda G — with additional music from RZA (Wu-Tang Clan) and Brazilian icon Seu Jorge — the feature-length “Blue Carbon” documentary is an environmentally-focused musical journey. One that follows Jayda on a quest to understand how Blue Carbon can help to mitigate the effects of climate change, and how we can protect these fragile ecosystems from further destruction.

Directed by Emmy/BAFTA-winning filmmaker Nicolas Brown (The Serengeti Rules) and produced by multi award-winning studios MAKE Waves and HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, the film explores shorelines from Senegal and Vietnam to France, Florida, Brazil and Colombia and focuses on the stories of the people living on the frontlines of climate change, who are leading Blue Carbon conservation efforts. It is these coastal communities and their symbiotic relationship with nature, expressed through music, dance and poetry, that became the beating heart of the “Blue Carbon” story that Jayda tells.

Blue Carbon is also supported by an education and outreach campaign that will generate grassroot activism around blue carbon ecosystems and engage high-level policymakers in conversation about how to harness nature-based solutions.

Additionally, Jayda has recently launched her new podcast series “Here’s Hoping”, which aims to be a platform for scientists, environmentalist activists, authors, musicians, psychologists, artists and Jayda herself, to discuss why they still feel hope, and the tools we can use to foster and maintain hope, for ourselves, our community and our planet. The Guardian recently included the podcast in their ‘Best of the Week” roundup, describing Jayda as ”a proper force of greatness.”
